City-building sim on the atmosphere
Atmocity is a premium simulation game that puts your organizational and management skills to the test. This city-building sim from Correcture Games AB has one unique feature: the cities are built on the sky. You design, build, and maintain gravity-defying areas. The game offers two features: a campaign mode where you’re the city mayor, or an anything-goes free-roaming mode.
Make no mistake: Atmocity has the realism and technicality one would expect from serious city-building games. In terms of graphics and gameplay, this game feels like a cross between Timberborn and Cities: Skylines II, with a concept similar to Airborne Kingdom.
Manage your own Atmocity
The premise for Atmocity is simple: build your city in the sky. Its main feature is a campaign mode with 15 levels, designed to gradually introduce the player to game mechanics and strategies, doubling as its tutorial mode. Still, it doesn’t fully cover everything you need to know, leaving a knowledge gap that adds to the initial challenge. Also, it comes with a free-roaming mode.
It has a good selection of structures and technologies to unlock, allowing players to experiment with various setups for their city. It’s up to the player, from residences to universities to commercial establishments. Of course, to ensure its survival, you’ll also need to consider strategic trade agreements and cultural developments. The idea of keeping your city afloat is also an interesting concept to explore.
If you find the sky city difficult, the game has a retro mode where you build on the ground like a good old city building. The graphics are more on the minimal side, which adds optimization and works from an aesthetic perspective. Another choking point in the game is its unusual camera controls, which allow for more angles but require a bit more time to understand.
A fun city-building with its own challenges
Overall, Atmocity takes a good swing at the flying cities concept. It might not be as detailed as the Cities games, but it works well combined with its gameplay concept and range of content. Its selection of buildings makes for a wide range of city-building ideas. Of course, like any other sim, it has its challenges and learning curves. Still, it’s worth every penny.
